We currently live and work out of YWAM Ships in Kona, Hawaii! If you're visiting the Big Island, send us an email or call us. Our contact details are below on every page. We would love to arrange a time to have a coffee or go snorkeling or even give a tour of our base and our University.
Our family has been radically impacted by the reality of God's grace and love! As a result, we are committed to making Jesus the center of our family and lifestyle. We reach out to the wayward and brokenhearted locally and globally to share the message of hope and demonstrate acts of generosity and mercy. Our family is consecrated to the purpose of knowing God and making God known! This is the call to action for Youth With A Mission (YWAM), which we joyfully serve in as full time volunteers.
Livé joined YWAM in 2001, Tessa in 2005, and Mateo in 2013. We met in Newcastle, Australia in 2005. We got married in 2011, in Canada. Countries with YWAM bases that we have served at over the years have been in New Zealand, Australia, Tahiti, Canada, and USA. We have a passion for training and mentoring young people to grow in their faith and express God's love to their families and the world. The Discipleship Training School is a big heart piece for us! It's the most important school that we run in YWAM for raising up generations of sold out Christians that will follow Jesus to the ends of the earth. We have staffed and led more than 10 of these schools and witnessed some of the craziest healing and transformation in peoples lives! This is the type of ministry that we can easily spend the rest of our lives doing.
Currently both of us serve on the leadership team for YWAM Ships Kona here in Hawaii. We have lived and worked within this YWAM community since 2015. The focus of our ministry here has been to reach the remote and isolated with the love of God by using vessels. We bring Bibles, water filters, medical aid, and training to these isolated coastal communities. Isolation is so extreme that vessels are the only way to access them. The vessels that we directly work operate is the YWAM Liberty in Papua New Guinea and Making Waves in Panama. We have a partnership with another sailing vessel called Cloud Nine in the Marshall Islands.

Discipleship Training School
Most commonly known as the DTS, this is YWAM's most essential school! Tessa and I love to staff and lead DTS. It's our foundational school that welcomes international students from all walks of life and church backgrounds. People in this school desire to grow in their relationship with God and to be equipped with a biblical worldview and an infectious faith that proclaims and reveals the love of God to the world. There is a lot of effort that goes into leading these schools. It takes a commitment of 8 months to prepare and lead it in the day to day schedule. Leading the students (ages 17-60) during 3 months of lectures followed by 2-3 months of an overseas field assignment in some of the most remote regions of the world or cities with the most needs to meet.
Tessa has been pioneering this area of administration since we started working with YWAM Ships. This is heavily detail oriented and has grown into one of our most critical areas of operation that directly impacts our ship ministries and operating locations around the world. She oversees teams of people in Registrar communication with incoming students; Placement communication and allocation of incoming staff and volunteers; Outreach Teams of other YWAM bases and church groups that would like to join the outreach of our ship ministries; and Visa Desk communication with anyone/everyone needing a visa into the USA or out of the USA to specific foreign ministry locations.
Livé oversees this fledgling area of administration and communication. He is always strategizing and executing ways to engage with more people about God's dreams for them. Every single person that enquires about our schools receive a phone call from his team. Information and testimonies are shared about the ship ministries and DTS. They encourage and pray with everyone over the phone attempting to connect with them and mobilize them in some way to helping fulfill the Great Commission. This ministry area will also facilitate teams to travel to events outside of YWAM to mobilize them to join our programs and/or outreaches. This team is always pushing for growth in our schools.
Staff training seminar
This is a quarterly training seminar for new staff that have joined our YWAM location. This is led by one of our leadership team members with other leaders and senior staff teaching and training in different sessions over one week. Tessa has led the last two. It is an orientation to our history, culture, values, vision, and mission. Other topics that are discussed are personal development, schedule and policies, our operating locations, etc. The staff are encouraged to prayerfully write out what two years of their staff commitment will look like. Livé speaks on the topic of "Student to Staff" and "Positive Reports."
Teaching & mentoring
Livé loves teaching on the topic of "Calling and Vision" for DTS. His goal is to inform people of their universal calling to relationship with God to their personal calling of how they can serve others with their particular talents and gifts in the body of Christ. It's not enough to live day to day, God desires to reveal than conceal His plans. He equips people for prayerfully writing out their personal vision and planning their life with God. He also likes to teach on the epistle to the Ephesians by Paul. Tessa and Livé both love to mentor new staff and upcoming leaders.
Papua new guinea
We have both been to Papua New Guinea on separate trips. Livé to the mountains and Tessa to the coast. Papua New Guinea (PNG) is geographically located north of Queensland, Australia and east of Indonesia in the South Pacific Ocean. There is an extreme challenge of delivering basic services, including health care, to PNG. Around 84% of the population live in remote, scattered communities surrounded by rugged terrain, complex river systems and an extensive coastline. Ships help to overcome these challenges in reaching isolated communities. Tessa's role is administrational streamlining of the right medical specialists, seaman, and outreach teams to the right times on our ship and the needs of the region that the ship will be at. Our ship serves along the North East to North West coasts of PNG.
Our leadership team for our YWAM Ships base is fluid and growing. We meet together every week to pray about and discuss guidance and implementation of how God is leading us, to lead our broader staff community in our local and global operations. Each of our leadership team members rotates each week to lead our corporate prayer times and staff meetings.
YWAM Ships Kona is a land based ministry operating location. It is located in Kailua-Kona on the west side of the Big Island of Hawaii. We handle training, fleet support, and medical volunteer allocation for our ships the M/V Pacific Link and M/V YWAM Liberty in Papua New Guinea. Now only do we work out of this location but we live in community with other staff, volunteers and students!
Below is a video that shows a little of what life is like here.
Videos about YWAM, DTS, & More
This is a brief 69 second video that will inform you about what YWAM is.
This is our latest favorite video about the Discipleship Training School! YWAM North Cascades created this amazing video! What makes it amazing is that it captures and conveys the culture and spirit of the DTS on a global level. The representation is indeed sprawling for a lot YWAM locations that run DTS. These are the schools that we will always be a part of running no matter how old we get!
This video was made by YWAM Townsville, Australia. They have provided incredible support and partnership with opening doors for YWAM Ships Kona. This video demonstrates the work that YWAM Ships Australia and Kona is doing in Papua New Guinea. There are currently three ships there with a fourth on the way from another YWAM base (YWAM Newcastle) jumping to continue meeting the needs of the PNG people.
